The Marielena Prokopiou and Konstantinos Lampsias-led Akrotiri Tankers has placed an order for another 157,000-dwt Suezmax tanker at New Times Shipbuilding.

According to shipbroker Bancosta, the Greek owner has contracted the additional Suezmax at the Chinese yard.

The vessel is priced at approximately $84.4m and is scheduled for delivery in June 2029, bringing Akrotiri Tankers’ total number of Suezmax tankers under construction at the yard to two.

The deal marks a further expansion of Akrotiri Tankers’ newbuilding relationship with New Times Shipbuilding.

New Times Shipbuilding secured Akrotiri Tankers’ first newbuilding contract, covering two 75,000-dwt LR1 product tankers priced at around $59m each and scheduled for delivery in 2028.

Earlier this year, Akrotiri Tankers entered the large crude tanker sector with an order for its first 157,000-dwt Suezmax at New Times Shipbuilding.

With the latest newbuilding order, the company now has two Suezmaxes on order at the Chinese yard, with both vessels scheduled for delivery in 2029.

Recent reports said the company had also ordered two 93,000-cbm very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) at New Times Shipbuilding, with delivery scheduled for 2029.

More significantly, the development makes New Times Shipbuilding the third privately owned Chinese shipbuilder — after Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and Hengli Heavy Industries — to enter the very large gas carrier sector, marking a key step in the yard’s strategy to build high-specification gas carriers.

All of Akrotiri Tankers’ recent newbuilding programmes have been placed at New Times Shipbuilding.

The decision reflects co-founder Marielena Prokopiou’s preference for New Times Shipbuilding as a tanker yard, following in the footsteps of her father, Greek shipowner George Prokopiou. As a result, Akrotiri Tankers has continued to place newbuilding orders at the Chinese yard.
